Quick release couplings are also known as quick coupler, quick connect coupling, or quick release fitting. They are made following the ISO 7241-A, Gromelle 6000, ISO 7241-B, Parker 60, and Faster depending on the industry and application intended. Quick release couplings are made in various sizes ranging from 1/4” to 2”. The working pressure of the couplings is determined by the size used, however, it can withstand a maximum of 950 bars. They are made of brass, carbon steel A105, or stainless steel SS316. Quick release couplings have two parts – male (plug or nipple) and female (socket or coupling). It uses the connection types National Pipe Thread (NPT) or British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP). Quick release couplings are used to create or dismantle the connection of fluid lines. |

1. What are Quick Release Couplings?
Quick Couplings are a fitting type used to join fluid lines with system components that often need connection and disconnection. They are suitable for use in a hydraulic or pneumatic system to create or dismantle fluid lines' connection.
The fittings are designed in a way to ensure easy installation. For instance, the male end is inserted into the female end to ensure the components are tightly fitted and sealed together. According to the industries and systems application, the couplings are designed following various standards such as Gromelle 6000, Parker 60, Hansen W6000, ISO 7241-B, ISO 7241-A. More so, quick release couplings are referred to as push-in connects because connection only occurs through a quick push. |
2. How does Quick Release Coupling work?
Quick release couplings are made of Brass (DIN-EN 12164), Carbon Steel (EN-10277-3), and Stainless Steel SS316 (AISI 316). The working pressure for quick release couplings is a maximum of 950 bars, however, there’s a different rating for each standard. For instance, the ISO 7241-A has a maximum of 350 bars working pressure, ISO 7241-B has a working pressure of 400 bars, while the Gromelle 6000 works with a maximum pressure rating of 950 bars.
The connection types available for quick release couplings are threaded BSPP and threaded NPT. The couplings are divided into two parts, male and female. The male is also known as the plug while the female part is the socket. For different standards, there are different connection processes. For Gromelle W6000, the connection type is a screw-to-connect. For others, ISO 7241-A, ISO 7241-B, and Hansen W6000, the connection is a push-to-connect type (male and female).

Quick release coupling is produced in different sizes ranging from 1/4” to 2”. However, a known fact explains that the smaller the sizes, the greater the working pressure it withstands and vice versa. For maximum safety, the factor to be used is 4.

3. How do you identify a hydraulic Quick Release Coupling?
There’s a wide availability of body and seal materials, which has increased the quick couplings' flexibility and versatility.

4. How do you install a Quick Release Coupling?
A quick coupling comprises the body, a collet, and an O-ring. The body of the coupling screens the O-ring and collet. The tube is then placed into the body through the collet and O-ring. The joining of these components gives the system a water-tight seal. When the system begins to run, there is an increase in the tube's pressure, which turns to water or air.
For the ISO 7241-A, the system is flexible for use in maintenance or operation systems. The coupling is designed in a ball closing system or poppet valve shape. The poppet valve is attached to a metal perch which helps keep the valve alignment in line with the settings and avoid flow duplication. The coupler sleeve and nipple body are stiffened to increase the resistance to different damages that could occur during system operation. The configuration type used for quick release coupling is NPT or BSPP. |
Parker 60 or ISO 7241-B are designed as poppet valves and a metal to metal valve stop, which helps keep valve alignment configured and avoid flow duplication. It is used for lower life cycle systems such as high pressure fluid transfer, mine roof support system, and hydraulic jacks. The connection type is a female pipe thread in NPT or BSPP.
203 Series TGW or Screw end Gromelle W6000 are applied for high pressure pipes, systems, and hydraulic applications. They ensure the smooth and quick running of fluid. The 203 Series TGW has a screw locking device that increases the resistance to heavy hydraulic loads. They can withstand harsh situations such as system vibrations, hose bending, or hydraulic shocks.
